However I would advise you ask yourself in the first instance the following questions:

Do I enjoy working with children?

Do I know about child development am I willing to learn about child development?

Do I have the funding for such things as alterations to property, advertising, license?

Is my home a safe environment for young children, what about pets?

Can I survive on low wages until the business in up and running (Click Here)?

Am I willing to have other families and Child Care Licensing Agency inspect my home?

Is my family supportive of my plans to open a Day Care Center and are they willing to get criminal background checks?

Am I able to make changes to my home as required by the licensing agency?

The most important aspect is to know the law and what licenses you will need. For the protection of all children it is not allowed to just simply place an advert in the local paper, scatter a few toys around and think you have a day care center.

“Get Licensed and Inspected (if applicable)

You should apply for your license far enough in advance so that it does not hold up your scheduled opening date. Remember that licensing application processing can take from three to six months. When you apply, you will be required to supply the names of all staff and substitutes, as well as family members and others who reside in your household. All of these individuals who are age 13 and older must pass a background check via the Child Abuse and Neglect Tracking System (CANTS) and the Statewide Sex Offenders Registry. Additionally, those 18 and older must be fingerprinted. A licensing application may be denied due to a past record of child abuse, neglect, criminal convictions, or current/on going criminal activity. After you have applied for your license, IDCFS will perform an on-site inspection for safety and staff compliance. There is no charge for the license. However, you will need to renew it every three years. Also, costs that you incur in becoming licensed or in meeting fire and health regulations are tax-deductible.”
