 Learning To Water Ski

Many Thanks to Christy Joswick for more skiiing information please visit Christy's website http://academic.scranton.edu/student/JOSWICKC2/default.html

As you glide across the water your mind is free to wander wherever it wishes.
You inhale a deep breath of salt water air and grip the ropes a little tighter as you approach a jump. Savouring the moment of acceleration and excitement you realize there is no place you would rather be. If you're a newcomer to water skiing or you just want to brush up on the sport, here are a few outlines, rules, and tips:

- Basic starting ski position is the cannonball

Tuck up as small as you can, hands and handle around your legs, and stay that way in the water. When the rope is tight and you're balanced, shout "Hit It Please!" Stay tucked. The boat will pull you out of the water Do not try to do a pull up yourself. Your skis will be on top of the water and all you need to do is stand up. Do so with straight arms, straight back and bent knees (ski position) You can practice this at home by stretching your arms out straight and lowering yourself into a chair. Your bent knees absorb the shock and bounce of the waves.

- You should be cruising along by now.

-If you need to stop, let go of the rope and sit on the skis

You'll just glide for awhile before your skis sink beneath you. Do not ski into the dock.

- Stay behind the boat during turn around.

When you want to cross the wake, do it quickly, lean out, pulling evenly on the handle, lift one ski a little and out you'll go. When you're ready to come back in, first go out a little wider, then come in quickly. The wake's bigger than you think.

- Most important rule

of water skiing- Have fun and be safe!

-Make sure your boat is fitted with its capacity plate
<.

-When towing someone

behind a boat, as well as a licensed driver, you also need someone above the age of 16 who can be a spotter and observe.

-Using two skis is easier than using one
for beginners.

Also do a few basic stretches before you start.

-Here are some important hand signals to know
