Anyone with a website these days, surely must ask the question “What makes a visitor click on ads?” Revenue from advertising is the life blood for many Internet businesses. Since building this site, it has increasingly intrigued me, when I check my daily stats why the huge fluctuation in clicks?
To Click Or Not To Click? Personally I’m a clicker, probably because whilst researching a topic, I need to gather as much information as possible. Working on this theory that for the most, the people using the internet are seeking information! Therefore the better the content and information supplied by a website, the less they need to look elsewhere. Can you guess where I’m going with this theory? It’s a catch22, to rank high with search engines you must follow the Golden rule and supply good content, but what if this jeopardizes your website revenue? If my content was total rubbish a visitor would probably do one of three things. a). Hit the back button, b). Click on details of another site that may have the info they need (money in the bank) or c). Enter they’re query into your search box (money in the bank). It’s madness! I would make a guess 30% of websites are self funded, they rely totally on advertising revenue. Google and others also rely on advertising revenue, yet no one is allowed in any way whatsoever to let visitors know this. WHY? If I were allowed to place a module advising visitors 'for more information visit our advertisers', I’d immediately be banned from Google and other’s, again I ask why? Surely it would benefit everyone including Google, Yahoo etc. I have advertised myself with Google and Yahoo, results were pretty mediocre to say the least. Now if you were visiting another site that did display my ad. and the “visit” module, then maybe I would have had more visitors from my ads. Yes it would cost me more money, I’m aware of this, that is why I chose to advertise my site to generate more visitors. Besides we are all able to set a daily limit on the funds, often for me this was not used up. Interesting thought, Google and others operate a ‘cloak and dagger’ approach to the value of individual ads. No one is 100% sure what ads generate the most, I’ve been told a certain ad click can achieve a revenue as much as $70, (as apposed the normal $0.10), wouldn't I be smiling, if I could find out how to place one of those ads on my site. LOL. I honestly don’t know how the likes of Google and Yahoo came up with the idea of bidding on ads and their process of allocating prices and position of each ad. It really is a lottery from every angle. Firstly whether or not a visitor decides to check out a websites ads, what value the ads have that are placed on your site and finally how much money it’s going to cost you to advertise your site. The results of this lottery can make or break a website in the early days, perhaps the God’s at Google, Yahoo and others believe webmasters just spend hours a day building and maintaining their sites just for fun and are not seriously running a business. So the mystery remains, guess we’ll never know who the ‘Clickers’ are, but for myself and I’m sure other webmasters we offer to all the 'Clickers' a HUGE “Thank You” . |
